While you may not think that summer is a season that’s particularly hard on your car, think again. Here’s how to get your car ready for sunny drives for weeks to come.
1. Check Your Tyre Pressure
This is worth mentioning separately to general tyre inspection. Always make sure you check that your tyres have the recommended pressure before you take your car out. The recommended tyre pressure is usually on a sticker inside the driver’s door, if not check the user manual.
2. Check Your Air Conditioning
You will likely be using your air conditioning a lot during the warmer months. It will save you time, money and effort to make sure it’s still operational after months of hibernation.
3. Wash Your Car
We all like our cars to look great in the sunshine. Treat yours to a fresh wash and scrub-down by hand, or at your local carwash in time for summer.
4. Check the Battery
This perhaps isn’t summer-specific, but it’s always worth checking your battery is up to the job. If not, it could leave you stranded in the middle of the blazing sun. Get it tested and checked out from season to season as a priority.
5. Get Your Fluids Topped Up
We all depend on more fluids than normal during warmer months and your car is no different. Check your coolant, brake fluid, steering fluid and wiper fluid at the very least. Your oil, of course, should always be kept topped-up.
6. Change Your Wiper Blades
Your wipers have been through a lot through winter and spring. It’s high time they were changed in time for summer, sometimes winter blades have a different type of rubber on them. Make sure they’re doing what they should before you hit the road.
7. Clean or Change Your Mats
It’s time to think about your car’s interior, too. Either clean or replace your mats completely, as these can harbour built-up dirt and sludge if you’ve been to the snow.
8. Rethink Your Boot
It’s time to leave the umbrella and thick coat at home and to start thinking about summer first aid. Take plenty of water, a sunshade, eye protection, skin protection and more. Be smart about what’s in your boot from season to season.
9. Go For a Complete Check-Up
There is no harm in taking your car for a complete check-up from season to season. Let an expert take a closer look at how your car is performing in terms of tyres, brakes and fluids.
