One in two Australian new car buyers is now choosing an SUV (sports utility vehicle). This category includes any 2 or 4-door wagon with a raised body. SUVs can be four-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or two-wheel drive.They have been the most popular new car market segment in Australia since 2017. Passenger cars are the next, followed by utes and vans. SUV sales have almost doubled in the last decade. Manufacturers have increased their SUV ranges.
Many newer models are simply adaptations of hatchbacks. For example, the Mitsubishi ASX SUV is an adaptation of the Mitsubishi Lancer. Similarly, the Subaru XV is an adaptation of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

The ASX is great value starting from about $26,000 drive-away.
Kia Seltos
The Kia Seltos also starts from around $26,000 drive-away.
Mazda CX-30
Not to be confused with the cheaper Mazda CX-3 SUV, the CX-30 has a more powerful engine. You should be able to pick up a base CX-30 model for around $32,500 drive-away.
Medium SUVS
Nissan X-Trail
The Nissan X-Trail has been among the world’s most popular SUVs in recent years. X-Trail prices in Australia start from around $29,000.
Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 is a step up in size from the Mazda CX-30. It has more leg room and cargo area. You can expect to pay around $33,000 drive-away for a base model.
Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 is easily the most popular of all SUVs at the moment (small, medium and large categories). The hybrid model is the most popular and you should be able to get one for around $38,000 drive-away.
Large SUVs
Toyota Kluger
If you’re a Toyota fan and you need something bigger than the RAV4, the Kluger is a great option. You should be able to pick one up for around $42,000 drive-away. It’s perfect for city driving and it seats seven people.
Isuzu MU-X
The MU-X is another seven-seater that you should be able to get for around $47,000 drive-away.
Toyota Landcruiser Prado
The Prado is a step up in price from the Toyota Kluger, starting from around $54,000 drive-away for a base model. It’s another seven-seater, but with more space than the Kluger. It’s also more suited to off-road driving.
Traditional SUV Favourites
There are some other heavy-duty four-while drive SUV models that have stood the test of time. The Mitsubishi Pajero and Nissan Patrol have both been popular models for many years.
Mitsubishi Pajero
You should be able to pick up a Pajero from $51,500 drive-away.
Nissan Patrol
A base model Patrol starts from around $85,000 drive-away.
Toyota Landcruiser
The offroad king doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting from $81,000 for the basic specification LC200 model, and going all the way to $115,00 for the Sahara.
