Hatchbacks

Sedans

Unlike hatchbacks, sedans have boots that are separate from the passenger cabin. They typically have more space and engine power than hatchbacks. Many popular vehicle models come in both hatchback and sedan versions. The Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla are examples.

 

Utes

Utes are the traditional ‘tradie’ vehicle in Australia. They come in both single-cab (2-door/2-seat) and dual-cab (4-door/4-seat) versions. They have a handy tray at the back for transporting a range of items.

SUVs

Convertibles have detachable or foldable roofs. They allow you to experience the open air while driving on a nice day. They’re also known as ‘sports cars’. Popular convertible models in Australia include the Jeep Wrangler and the Mazda MX-5.

 

Coupes

Coupes are usually two-door, high-powered sedans. They are most suitable for single drivers or couples who want a bit of luxury. Examples are the Ford Mustang and the BMW 4 Series.

• how you will use the car,
• how much you can afford, and
• the features that you need.

 
Once you have decided on the type of car you want to buy, other major buying considerations include:
• its warranty (if you’re buying from a dealer),
• its age and odometer reading (if you’re buying second-hand),
• its fuel efficiency,
• its ANCAP safety rating, and
• the vehicle’s reputation.

 
Before you buy any car, you should also:
• conducting as much online research as possible, and
• test drive it.

 
If you’re buying second-hand, you should also:
• arrange for an independent mechanical inspection, and
• check that there is no outstanding debt on the vehicle if you’re buying privately. You can do this by checking the Personal Properties Security Register (PPSR).
